Custom Fields
The metadata your productions arrive with, custodian, source path, Bates reference, confidentiality designation. Overlay imports map spreadsheet columns onto these, and reviewers search them from the Search screen. Fields defined here are searchable immediately; nothing is ever deleted, so what a production recorded stays explainable.
Add a field
The key is what an overlay column maps onto and cannot be changed afterwards, a load file that worked last month would stop matching. The display name is what reviewers see and can be changed freely.
Defined fields
Values is how many documents carry this field. Once that is above zero the type is frozen: changing it would leave existing values in one column and new ones in another, and search would quietly see only half of them.
